Dragon City asks you to do three things at once. Its App Store page lists them: "build a magical floating city, collect and breed over 2,000 unique dragons, and battle other Dragon Masters in action-packed, real-time PvP combat." Most players love one of those more than the others, so the best games like Dragon City depend on which one you'd keep. This list sorts eight of them by that: battles first, then breeding and collecting, then trading, which Dragon City only allows for Orbs.
One game here, Dragonbred, is ours. It's marked as ours and it has no battles, which we say up front. Everything about the other seven was checked on their store pages, official sites and wikis in October 2026.

If you play Dragon City for the battles
Monster Legends
Monster Legends comes from Socialpoint, the same studio, and it shows. You build an island with habitats tied to elements, farms and a Breeding Mountain, and its wiki says each parent passes one element to the baby. The battle side is built out: Live Duels against real players, Leagues, team Wars and a role for every monster (attacker, tank or control). There are over 900 monsters, with new ones every week, and it has run since 2013.
It's the closest thing to Dragon City with monsters in place of dragons.
War Dragons
War Dragons from Pocket Gems is a 3D real-time strategy game for iOS and Android, running since 2015. You breed dragons in the Breeding Castle, paying Egg Tokens, and its wiki says results often come down to chance. Breeding feeds an army: you build an island fortress with more than 15 kinds of defensive towers, and guilds coordinate attacks on other guilds in real time. It has over 100 dragons.
It suits players who liked Dragon City's alliances and want team fights with more strategy.
Dragons: Titan Uprising
Ludia's Dragons: Titan Uprising is a How to Train Your Dragon puzzle game from 2019. You match rune stones to fight battles, with a team chosen from nearly 100 dragons, and you hatch eggs and breed wild dragons in your own Dragon Hatchery. Its App Store history shows only bug-fix updates through 2025, the last in December, so expect little new content.
It suits fans of match-3 games and of the films.
If you play Dragon City for the breeding and the book
DragonVale
DragonVale has run since 2011, a year before Dragon City, and DECA Games runs it today. Breeding works much the same way: the elements of a pair decide which hybrids can hatch. Where Dragon City has arenas, DragonVale has park building, dragon races and quests, and every stage of every dragon is drawn by hand. Our guide to games like DragonVale goes through its own alternatives.
It suits Dragon City players who mostly enjoy the collection.
Dragon Mania Legends
Gameloft's Dragon Mania Legends has run since 2015, with over a thousand species and islands to fill with farms, habitats and decorations. New dragons come from pairing species, and the official site posts the parents for each week's featured dragon. Its store page talks of training dragons into "powerful warriors" and taking them on journeys, and clans let you plan together and swap gifts. Wikipedia counts more than 7 million active players.
It suits players who want the collecting with a softer, cuter look.
If you want to trade dragons, not just Orbs
Dragon City's Trading Hub swaps Orbs, the items that strengthen dragons. If you'd rather trade the dragons themselves, these three let you.
Dragon Adventures
Dragon Adventures is a Roblox game by Sonar Studios with over 200 species, running since 2019. Players trade dragons, eggs, potions and items, and auction dragons on Trade Island. Breeding passes traits down: each color comes from the range between the parents' colors, and a pairing has a 33% chance of a non-basic element. It's free, with game passes sold for Robux.
Flight Rising
Flight Rising is a free browser game, running since 2013, that its own overview describes as "dragon breeding, adventuring, combat, and collecting." Its dragons carry genes in 177 colors that pass from parents to babies, and its Auction House is where players sell dragons and items.
Dragonbred (our game)
Dragonbred has no battles and no city to build, so it isn't a like-for-like swap. What it offers a Dragon City player is elements that work as genes, and a market where the dragons themselves change hands.
In Dragon City, a pairing's elements decide which hybrids are possible. In Dragonbred, an element is a gene a dragon can carry without showing. Lava, the one element so far, is recessive and fills a dragon's markings. Breed a Lava to a dragon without it and every baby carries Lava hidden; breed two of those and each egg has a 25% chance of showing it. The combinations book pairs every body color with every element, and the first keeper to hatch each square holds that world first forever.
New dragons come from crates and from breeding. The Lava Crate costs 250 Embers, bought with real money, and each one has a 2% chance of a Lava dragon. The free Daily Pass gives one on days 7 and 30, and other keepers sell sealed crates for Scales, the currency you earn by playing. On the market you can list dragons, take offers and counter them, or trade directly; the seller's 10% fee is burned rather than collected. Selling dragons on the market explains how it works.
It plays in the browser on a phone or a computer. The iPhone app isn't out yet.
How to choose
- Battles are the point: Monster Legends for one-on-one PvP and leagues, War Dragons for guild strategy.
- The book is the point: DragonVale or Dragon Mania Legends.
- You want to own and trade the dragons you breed: Dragon Adventures, Flight Rising or Dragonbred.
