The best dragon breeding games split into two kinds, and most lists mix them up. In the first kind, two dragons of the right elements make a known hybrid, and the fun is completing the collection. In the second, every dragon carries genes it got from its parents, and the fun is steering those genes over generations. Below are ten dragon breeding games you can play online today, most of them free, with what each one does well and who it suits.

One of them, Dragonbred, is ours. It is marked as ours, it comes last, and it gets the same treatment as the rest. Everything said about the other nine was checked on each game's own site, store page or wiki in October 2026.

How we picked

  • Breeding is central. It has to be a main way you get new dragons, not a side feature.
  • It's playable now. Games that have closed are out. School of Dragons, for one, shut down on June 30, 2023.
  • Fair to each game. Every entry says what the game is good at, not only what it lacks.

The list isn't a ranking. A collector, a geneticist and someone who wants to fight with their dragons will each want a different game.

Hybrid collectors: pair elements, fill the book

These games share one idea. The elements or species of the two parents decide which dragons the egg can be, so breeding is a hunt for the right pairs and a bit of luck.

DragonVale

DragonVale has run since 2011 on iOS and 2012 on Android. Backflip Studios made it, and DECA Games has run it since March 2020. You build a park of floating islands and breed two dragons in the Breeding Cave; the elements of the pair decide which hybrids are possible, and the rarest have low odds. Every stage of every dragon is drawn by hand. Friends can send gems and gifts and breed with each other's dragons in the Cooperative Breeding Cave, but we found no way to trade dragons themselves.

It suits collectors who like decorating as much as breeding, with hundreds of dragons to chase and seasonal events all year.

Dragon City

Dragon City from Socialpoint launched on Facebook in 2012 and now runs on iOS, Android and Windows (the Facebook version closed in 2020). Two dragons of level 4 or higher breed a hybrid, picked at random from the eggs that pairing can make. The App Store listing counts over 2,000 dragons, and there are real-time PvP arenas and alliances. Its Trading Hub swaps Orbs, the items that power dragons up, not the dragons.

It suits players who want breeding to feed a battle team.

Dragon Mania Legends

Gameloft's Dragon Mania Legends came out on iOS and Android in 2015 and is still updated. Its site posts a dragon of the week with the pair that breeds it, and its store page invites you to "try different combinations to unlock new species." Friends visit each other's islands and swap gifts. Wikipedia counts more than 222 million downloads.

It suits players who want a bright, easy-going collection game.

War Dragons

War Dragons by Pocket Gems is a 3D real-time strategy game for iOS and Android, out since 2015 and marking its 11th anniversary this year. Dragons are crossbred in the Breeding Castle for Egg Tokens, and its wiki says the results often come down to chance.

It suits players who see breeding as the road to a stronger army.

Inheritance games: what the parents have, the baby can get

Here a baby's look comes from its own parents, not from a recipe, so two pairs of the same kind can give very different clutches.

Flight Rising

Flight Rising opened in 2013 and is run by Stormlight Workshop. It's free in the browser, and its own guide calls breeding "the central focus." Each dragon has primary, secondary and tertiary genes, each shown in one of 177 colors, and babies inherit them from their parents, with rarer genes less likely to pass. A nest holds one to five eggs that incubate for about five days, and each breed waits 15 to 35 days before it can breed again. The official genes article is clear that there are no recessive or hidden genes. Dragons and items sell in the Auction House, and the front page showed over 70,000 users online when we checked.

It suits players who care about color and art, and want a big, settled community.

Dragon Adventures

Dragon Adventures is a Roblox game by Sonar Studios, live since 2019, with more than 1.7 billion visits and over 200 species. Each color on a baby is picked from the range between its parents' colors, a pairing has a 33% chance of a non-basic element, and mutated parents raise the odds of a mutated baby. Players trade dragons, eggs and items, and there's an auction house. It's free, with game passes sold for Robux.

It suits Roblox players who want to explore and fly with friends, up to 20 to a server.

Day of Dragons

Day of Dragons is an online creature survival game for Windows from Beawesome Games, in Early Access since December 2019 at $19.99. You play one of several dragon species. Dragons can lay eggs that other players hatch, and each egg inherits stats from each parent. Its English Steam reviews are Mixed, 67% positive of about 4,400.

It suits players who want to be the dragon more than run a breeding program.

Dragon Breeder Game

Dragon Breeder Game by Rare Breed Games is free in the browser and lists "Mendelian inheritance with 100+ traits," rare mutations such as hexapods and hydras, and a marketplace for dragons and items. It's very early: the page title still says pre-alpha, and it showed 2 players online when we looked.

It suits genetics fans who don't mind an early game and want to help shape it.

A classic that runs on clicks

Dragon Cave

Dragon Cave by T.J. Lipscomb has run in the browser since 2006. You pick eggs from the cave's regions and raise them with views and clicks from other people. A pair of adults can breed once a week, and you can trade eggs and hatchlings, though not adults. An account is free.

It suits anyone who wants a light collecting habit that takes a few minutes a day.

Dragonbred, our game

Dragonbred is the dragon breeding game we make. It's free in the browser on a phone or a computer; the iPhone app isn't out yet. Its genes work the way ball python morphs do: recessive, dominant, and incomplete dominant with a stronger super form. The field guide holds 28 morphs built from 20 genes, and a dragon can carry a gene it doesn't show. The game tracks those hidden hets as real percentages that move with every clutch, which is the heart of it (hets and possible hets explains the math). A clutch is one to six eggs, the dragons are 3D, and the player market takes dragons and sealed crates, with offers and direct trades. Scales are earned by playing; Embers, bought with real money, open the Iron and Lava crates.

What it doesn't have: battles, a park to decorate, or a community anywhere near the size of the games above. It's new.

It suits players who like planning pairings, reading odds and proving what a dragon carries. What is Dragonbred? covers the whole game.

Which dragon breeding game should you play?

  • You want genes, not recipes: Dragonbred for Mendelian rules and hidden carriers, Flight Rising for color and art, Dragon Breeder Game if you like testing early builds.
  • You want to collect a big book of dragons: DragonVale or Dragon Mania Legends.
  • You want to battle: Dragon City or War Dragons.
  • You want to be a dragon, or fly with friends: Day of Dragons or Dragon Adventures.
  • You have five minutes a day: Dragon Cave.
